Welcome to ABC Llama!

A rapid fire game to help kids learn their ABC's and 123's.

Why is ABC Llama better at teaching the ABCs?

  • The gifs provide a reward your kids will be motivated by.
  • You can tailor the challenge for your child, from letters A to D, up to the whole alphabet or short phrases.

Why is ABC Llama better at teaching the 123s?

  • We start with matching very small numbers of dots, which is easy for two year olds. Next, we mix in the numbers 1 and 2 alongside dots, so that very young kids learn to intuitively associate the number with the value.
  • We introduce the concept of addition in level two before we've fully switched from dots to numbers. This is because it's easy for a baby to recognise that two separate dots is equivalent to - well - two dots. So the concept of addition gets learned intuitively, prior to introducing larger numbers like 3 and beyond.

Why did I make ABC Llama?

I wanted to teach my daughter to read early. I found plenty of ABC apps, but they were too easy or too difficult and couldn't be tuned. Whilst they had good graphics even the paid apps didn't seem very intuitive or exciting.

So I made ABC Llama! Helped along with physical flashcards and bedtime books, my daughter was recognizing three letter words and adding small numbers whilst she was still two years old, and your kid can too (update - she's five now, and acing reading at school, and the numbers mode is still proving useful).

Is this free?

Completely free. No ads either :) That's how the Llama rolls.

Is there a risk that an inappropriate gif will pop up?

No, I personally selected 127 gifs that preschoolers will love. Different ones get unlocked in the higher levels to keep it interesting.

Tips for success:

  • Make sure sound is turned up to get the applause.
  • Increase the touch sensitivity on your phone for small fingers.
  • Don't push your kids - it will backfire. Let them play if they want.
  • Little and often for best results. Two minutes a day is good.
  • Don't use ABC Llama in isolation. Read books and try flashcards and other apps.
  • Don't just give them your phone. Play with them.
  • Take turns with your child. Ask them to help you.
  • Get two of your child's teddies/toys and pretend they are taking turns. Your child will be keen to help them out too.
  • Have fun mimicking the cartoons/animals in the gifs.
  • Try playing when older children are around. They will show off and the younger children will copy.
